The Vault on Abbeydale Road
Yesterday, we finally got round to visiting The Vault for the first time!
The Vault is ‘Sheffield’s newest curiosity shop’, stocking everything from arts, crafts, jewellery and homeware, to antiques, vintage clothing, handmade soaps and candles. The Vault building is the old HSBC bank (hence the name!) on Abbeydale Road/the corner of Sheldon Street. It isn’t that long ago that it was a bank, and then I think it stood empty for a bit before The Vault moved in.
There is a main sales floor area on the ground floor, with lots of different traders, all selling interesting and unique stuff. There are also lots of books!
There is a fabulous unit called ‘One for Luck‘ which is run by a lovely lady called Lucy. She stocks some great things – vintage clothes, jewellery and homeware, and even some of my cards! It was nice to see them as part of her display of interesting bits and pieces.
I bought a great brooch from Lucy’s unit…

GRRR! Brooch by Tara Mclntosh of 'Twiggd' - seems to sum up how I feel most of the time! Must be getting old & miserable!

Lucy is also currently organising a One for Luck vintage & craft fair at The Workstation on Paternoster Row. It’s taking place on Saturday 19th May from 10.30am – 5.00pm. There will be a variety of different arts, crafts and vintage stalls, and entry is FReeeee! If you’re interested in finding out the exhibitors, please follow the link to view more details on Facebook - One for Luck vintage & craft fair
Anyway, like I said, the building is the old bank. It’s really cool, with different rooms, and you can visit the original bank vault in the basement of the building, complete with safe and the biggest most heaviest door I’ve ever seen.
We met Tracy, the lady who runs the shop, and she showed us round, which was really nice. She said she’s had to fix the vault door open…I’m not surprised! I would definitely not like to get trapped in that room! It has a bit of a scary feel about it, although it has now been transformed into a unit, and the safe is even in use as a display cupboard! The strongroom shelving remains too, and is also now used for displaying stock.
Amongst all the antiques and bric-a-brac there is also a ‘Wedding Room’, with an amazing selection of second-hand wedding dresses and accessories. Hopefully there will be some craft and sewing events coming up at The Vault sometime soon too. See the Facebook page to find out about future events.
There is a very nice little Coffee Berry cafe at The Vault, which sells coffees, teas, homemade cakes and even Sheffield honey!
I really recommend a visit to The Vault. If you like art, craft and bric-a-brac type things then it’s well worth it. There are loads of other antique places near by too, so you could make a day of it.
