My own dear photographs…
Have you ever seen that website called ‘Dear Photograph‘?
Dear Photograph was recently set up by a young Canadian lad called Taylor Jones, and has grown really quickly in popularity. He was looking through some old family snaps, when he realised that his brother was sitting in the exact same spot as he was in the photo he was looking at, taken 15 years previously. It was at that moment he had the idea to hold up the photo, in the same spot where it was originally taken, and take a picture of it!
And that is the aim of the website – for other people to ‘take a picture of a picture from the past, in the present’, and share it. You can submit your photograph to the website, and they feature a different one every day. There are some really good ones on there, it’s worth having a look if you haven’t already, although it’s also worth remembering that if you do submit any yourself, the site will retain the rights to your images.
It’s weird, because you don’t realise how it will make you feel seeing a picture from the past taken in the present day. It’s strange looking back and thinking of how things were when you were younger, or even before you were born!. The idea behind Dear Photograph becomes even more evocative when the pictures feature people who are no longer around. Kind of happy and sad at the same time!
Anyway, having checked out loads of the photos from other people, I couldn’t wait to try out the idea myself when I went back to see my M&D for the week in September!
All you have to do is try and line up the photograph correctly with the walls, doors, staircases, or whatever still remains in the present day! I thought it would be easy, but it’s actually really tricky, and every photo took me ages to get anywhere near lined up!
This is what you have to do…find an old photo of yourself or of somebody else. Then you stand in the same place where the original photograph was taken and hold the photo out in front of you. Here is the first picture I tried…it’s a pic of me, aged about one and a half in an attractive red babygrow. As you can see, the background hasn’t really changed in about 30 years!
Then you line the photo up with the door frame and wall (or whatever). Here is the picture lined up. It only took me about 20 attempts to get it right!
Once I started I couldn’t stop trying different pics…
This is me with my Grandad.
This is me aged two, on my tractor. Goliath was his name.
Me, my Dad and Grandad on the driveway.

Christmas morning, 1984-ish - I do believe that is my very favourite game emerging from the wrapping paper - yes, Grabbin' Dragons

Spirograph! YES! Very happy with that. But...and I don't mean to sound ungrateful...amongst all those presents, you will note there is no sign of Mr. Frosty. Year after year I waited, and he never showed up
When I go home and stay now, I sleep in the spare room, which used to be our room when we were little.
My first year of secondary school (1990 I think!)
I even managed to encourage my mum and dad to join in with the fun times…
And now!
I recommend having a go yourself if you can, it’s quite fun!

hiya Val! thanks for reading and your nice comments about my cards and dear photograph pictures! am so glad you can relate to my mr. frosty yearning! i don’t know what it was about him that i liked so much, as looking back he doesn’t seem THAT exciting…all i knew was that I really wanted one! i also loved carebears too! i didnt have any of the big plush ones..just loads of the mini plastic figurines. i had the tenderheart one and the good luck one too! i quite liked the grumpy one, i think he was dark blue. i had a few with moving arms and legs with tufts of hair on their heads! think ive still got them in the loft
will take a good look round your blog soon! looks like we have lots of similar interests and grew up at a similar time…Janine x
P.S.) When I did a search for “Mr. Frosty” a few minutes ago, since I’d never heard of that toy before, one of the top search results was a news article that stated that “Mr. Frosty” was the UK’s most-wished for toy that children asked for but never received for Christmas. Does that make you feel better?
You weren’t alone, anyway!
Wow, so much to see and catch up on here the past few weeks.
I love your handmade cards, first of all. So unique and sweet–They are really gifts in themselves much more than “just” cards.
I too love the “Dear Photograph” site.
The photos of your parents are great. What a sweet bride she was, and I love her bright flowers.
I read about your always wanting a Mr. Frosty–which I, here in the USA, had never heard of before–and I thought, “Ooh, I could find her one on eBay!” And indeed, they are on eBay, but alas, they are out of my surprising-someone-with-a-”little”-gift price-range! (GBP 17.99 [approx. US $28.20] for shipping?! Just for shipping!? Ay!!) I hope you find one someday just for fun.
I myself always wanted the “Tender Heart” Care Bear–were Care Bears popular where/when you grew up? They were huge here. The “Tender Heart” bear had normal brown-colored bear fur,
and he had a simple red heart on his belly. My parents couldn’t afford one of the bigger-size Care Bears when I was a kid, though, so I only ever got a mini one–maybe the size of my hand–and the one I received was “Good Luck Bear,” a green one with an ever-winking eye. I’ve never told my parents how much that bear SCARED me!! (Winking still freaks me out, and this bear’s face was just frozen in a creepy wink. Ahhh, the childhood terrors!) So I relate to your Mr. Frosty yearning.
Best Wishes,
Val
its made me feel much better to know i was not the only child in the world without a mister frosty!! x
Ditto moi on the mr frosty, i love your mum and dads wedding ones!
Hi Mr Coates!! Thank u for looking at my blog! I know that’s the only thing – I’m lucky my M&D are in the same house (and that they took so many photos!) Outdoor/holiday type ones are good too though if you ever get to go back to any buildings or places where you once were! You should have a look at the DP website too if you haven’t already, there are some really good ones on there. xx
Bloody amazing! Only works if you have access to your world of the 1970s/80s I don’t sadly. But this is epic!
HA HA! blimey, maybe they were more of a danger than we knew!? that is funny! i do seem to vaguely remember having one of those cadburys money box things though! x
Did you never get a Mr Frosty because the exposed blades were too dangerous? Cos that’s the excuse I got every year. Never got a Cadbury Money Box/Bar Machine either, but never got a reason why.
I don’t have many childhood photos or access to any of the houses they were taken in, but I love that website!
aw thankU sian! i did have fun takin all the pics..there were loads of others i wanted to use too, but some of them would just not line up however hard i tried!! im glad i was not the only one to be deprived of a mr frosty..it seemed that every1 had one besides me! haha! i must confess i did FINALLY get one when i was 19, as it was a long running joke by then & my sister thought it would be funny to buy me one for xmas! xX
Janine, these are sooo wonderful! I mean, I am in love with Dear Photograph anyway, but you’ve done it so brilliantly and beautifully that you have brought a genuine little tear to mine eye xx (and I never got a Mr Frosty either)
